TITLE: Gospel Choir Contest: 2002 Grand Prix

This week, we bring you a look at the Gospel Choir Contest finals held at Tokyo's Nakano Sun Plaza last November 30th. The event featured eight groups that had previously qualified in regional contests and who came to the finals to sing their hearts out. Black Gospel singer Vernessa Mitchell was the invited guest and gave a powerful performance on stage, as well as a warm interview to us. As a bona fide professional singer, she has the distinction of having performed at former president Bill Clinton's Inaugural Ball, but also gives her time and energy to helping young people get a healthy upbringing. She talks with us in this program about her own perspective on life.

Currently working as the manager of a golf course, this week's guest is the brother of pro golfer, Tsuneyuki Nakajima. All five children in the Nakajima family grew up with the harshly disciplined training  that their golf legend father imposed upon them. Later, his father had Atsushi take a hand in managing a golf course with him, but the father's sudden death ended up putting the responsibility for the whole project squarely upon Atsushi's shoulders. It wasn't long before he was hospitalized with a severe emotional condition. It was at that time that his brother came to see him and brought a Bible along with him. What was it that happened then that so turned Atsushi Nakajima's life around?

TITLE: Eh? You're Pastor's a Boxer?!
GUEST:
Makoto Hirata

This week's guest is Pastor Makoto Hirata, who oversees a martial arts program he calls the "Pogona Club Gym" inside his church. Several years ago, as a result of taking his son to karate lessons, Hirata himself decided to take up one of the newer marital arts forms -- combinations of karate, kick-boxing, etc. As a result, he currently participates in tournaments, gives lessons and is often invited as a speaker on the subject. He says he's often asked, "Why would a pastor who's supposed to preach love want to be a boxer?" How does he reply to such a question? In this program we ask him to share this thoughts about this and much more.
