Israel's 60th Anniversary Week

  This week, we have two stories from Israel. The first commemorates 60 years since the modern-day founding of this nation. Next is a report about the most recent archeological findings from excavations at Jerusalem's City of David. The "City of David" is the location of King David's palace, which he built when he first made Jerusalem the capital of Israel and is the oldest section of the city of Jerusalem itself. We show you how the excavations are proceeding and highlight some of the fascinating discoveries that have been made so far. Finally, we have a report from the African nation of Rwanda about how the people of this formerly civil war-torn country are working in a surprising way to transform their nation.

  Maiko Sugai began her acting career in stage productions of the Seinen-za Theater Company and recently has begun to appear in full-length feature films. Her debut film was the 2004 production of Thank you, Papa Ishii!, followed in 2006 by Fudeko, Her Love: the Angel's Piano, both of which have drawn an enthusiastic response from the public. In this program, we talk with her about the joy and struggles she's experienced from her work in the world of entertainment.

 We're now into the final stage of this popular series. In this program, we visit the Temple Mount in the heart of Jerusalem's Old City. Though the site was the original location of the Jewish Temple from the time of King Solomon onward, it is now dominated by the Muslim structure known as the "Dome of the Rock" mosque. In this program, we stand upon the Temple Mount and think together about the main causes for the conflict we see in the Middle East.

  This week, our first report tells the story of Unit 25, an Argentina prison in which all of the prisoners have become Christians. Next, we have the story of Tony Davis, a Gospel singer in the U.S. who became the victim of a shooting, yet lived to see God work a miracle in his life through it. Our final report is also from the U.S. and details the testimony of Karen Coon, a methamphetamine addict and bar owner who found Jesus Christ while serving her prison term.

#1173 "An Accessory Designer Fights for Her Life" -- Kyōko Nawa
  Kyōko Nawa lives in Ichinomiya in Aichi Prefecture and, since her high school days, has been struggling with a serious condition known as Ulcerative Colitis (UC), a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Eventually, the pain became so intense that she began taking sleeping pills, sedatives and alcohol to get some relief. These only made her condition worse, however, and chronic lethargy and sleeplessness characterized her life. In this program, we talk with Ms. Nawa about what happened to her that finally brought hope into her life.

The sights in this program will focus your attention on the cross of Christ and its meaning for your life.

#1175 "A Breakout Kids' Choir" -- Yōsuke Monoi & Tsutomu Aoki
  The Evergreen Choir, formed in 1999, is made up mostly of students from the Momi-no-Ki Kindergarten in Tōkyō's Inagi City. Over the past few years, the group has produced a Gospel music album and appeared in on-stage musicals, garnering quite a name for themselves around the country. This year, as well, they'll be appearing in the musical, "Gift" on November 1st and 2nd. In this program, Evergreen Choir director Yōsuke Monoi and producer Tsutomu Aoki share with us about the history and activities of this unique and talented group.

  This week, we have three reports from the U.S. First is an interesting look at the "Saddleback Forum" meeting -- a public question-and-answer session with U.S. presidential candidates Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama which was convened at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California and moderated by church pastor Rick Warren. Also, we have the story of an Iranian woman who came to America to study, but quite unexpectedly found Jesus Christ as her savior. Finally, we share with you the story of Jacob DeShazer, a member of the Doolittle Raiders during World War II, and how God changed his hatred for the Japanese into a missionary calling to bring Japanese people to Christ.

#1177 "A Philosophy of Cancer Outpatient Care" -- Dr. Okio Hino
  Cancer pathologist and professor at Juntendō University Dr. Okio Hino recently published a book by the title of A Philosophy of Cancer Outpatient Care. Over the course of five days between January and March of this year, Dr. Hino began a test of the theory he promotes in the book. The purpose of his method, he says, is to help doctors and cancer patients get together to talk about life. In this program, we talk with Dr. Hino about his book, his purpose behind writing it and the things he'd like to accomplish from this point on.

  It's been reported that more than 20 million people around the world are in need of a wheelchair. Unfortunately, for mostly economic reasons, most people who need a wheel chair can't get one. For that reason, the non-profit organization "Wheelchairs of Hope" was founded and its specialty is delivering wheelchairs to folks who couldn't otherwise get them. In this program, the "movers" behind this activity, Mary Penner and Mitsuru Kawasaki, talk with us about the work of donating wheelchairs to the needy.

 This time, we'll be walking along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem's Old City. This is the street upon which Jesus walked to Mt. Calvary, bearing His cross. Christians around the world come to walk this street and experience something of what it might have been like to carry the Lord's cross.

A book entitled, A Pastor Unravels the Riddle of the Heart Sutra was recently published. The author and our guest for this program is Rev. Shōhei Yamato, pastor of Kyōto Bible Church and full-time lecturer at Tōkyō Christian University. In this program, we talk with Pastor Yamato about the similarities and differences between Christianity and Buddhism. We also look at some comparisons between the words of the Bible and the Heart Sutra, which is revered in Japan's Jōdo ("Pure Land") sect of Buddhism. (Re-broadcast)

Our third report is about Bruce Overstreet, a former competitive bicycle racer and currently a Christian and Missionary Alliance pastor, who's undertaking a 3,900-mile ride across the U.S. to raise money for poor children in the African nation of Mali.

Each year in February, the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Association (JELA) and Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church partner together in a project called "India Work Camp." Our guests this week are two volunteers who participated in the work camp activities and bring us a report about the facility and the activities that go on there. They also share with us their thoughts about the project the joy they discovered in being able to serve others there.

#1183 "Harps of Prayer" -- Carol Sack
  One of the various activities sponsored by the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Association (JELA) is a group called "Lyra Precaria," or Harps of Prayer. The goal of the group is to train volunteers in the use of harp performance for the purpose of ministering to others. Participants go through an 18-month training program with the goal of using their musical skills to deliver "living prayers" of love to people who are suffering. The group's leader, Carol Sack, joins us to explain the work and how it got started in the first place.
